Up till now cables have always been needed for games, but in the future games such as car racing, football and various chases will also be possible on a notebook via the mobile phone network. This will be ensured by LTE (Long Term Evolution), the 4th Generation (4G) of mobile networks – a further development of UMTS and HSDPA technology. This enables speeds of up to 100 Mbps in the downlink (transferring data from the Web) and up to 50 Mbps in the uplink (transferring data via the Web to the server).
The so-called latency, this is the time you wait until the action has been carried out on the Net, takes about 10 milliseconds – in comparison to 60 milliseconds on the mobile phone network today. This is particularly important for gamers because the positioning data has to be communicated to players very quickly so that they can know exactly who is moving where. High-speed broadband is necessary so that movements are judder free and the virtual world can be depicted with as many details as possible. The bonus at the Alcatel-Lucent LAN Party was that ten Notebooks were equipped with LTE modems thus connecting the games via mobile network.
