Indian BWA Winners Allowed to Offer Voice Over LTE

Indian broadband wireless access (BWA) winners can offer voice over LTE network now. According to a NDTV report, 4G operators can provide voice services along with high-speed Internet if they pay a fee of 16.58 billion rupees.

RIL, which has nationwide BWA license for nationwide, may launch TD-LTE later this year and intends to invest $10 billion in its LTE network. Operator has already licensed SPIRIT DSP Mobile Video Engine and has selected SPIRIT’s software products for voice and video calls over LTE.

Bharti Airtel has already 4G LTE services in Pune, Kolkata and Bengaluru using TD-LTE technology and is currently using Circuit Switched Voice Fall Back (CSFB) technology to support voice calls over 3G.  Also in 2012, Airtel also acquired 49 percent interest in Qualcomm AP’s India entities that hold BWA licenses in Delhi, Mumbai, Haryana and Kerala.

Tikona Digital Networks plans to deploy wireless broadband networks in the five circles it has license to operate. Operator won the frequencies in Gujarat, Rajasthan, UP-East, UP-West and Himachal Pradesh Indian BWA auction. It may initially launch LTE services in 2013 in Gujarat and Rajasthan.

Augere, a wireless broadband service provider with 4G licenses, has given TD-LTE contract to Ericsson in two Indian states Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, and plans to offer  broadband services under its ZOOSH brand.
