January 18, 2010 – Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) to offer a glimpse into the future of mobile broadband with live demonstrations of a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in the 2.6 GHz spectrum band and the European debut of the ng Connect “LTE Connected Car.” Taking place on January 19 at the company’s campus in Vélizy, just outside of Paris, this event for reporters, analysts and Alcatel-Lucent customers also will feature demonstrations of exciting new applications conducted in cooperation with other companies in the LTE “ecosystem” including mobile device maker LG Electronics, mobile gaming company FishLabs, digital signage leader SIGNEXX and mobile security and digital security leader Gemalto.

Reporters interested in attending the event in person should please contact the Alcatel-Lucent press office at press@alcatel-lucent.comor call + 33 (0)1 40 76 12 98 for more details.

This event will mark the first live demonstration in Europe of the LTE Connected Car, an advanced solution concept that Alcatel-Lucent developed with other members of the ng Connect Program including QNX Software Systems, Toyota Motor Sales (TMS) USA, Inc., chumby, Kabillion and Atlantic Records. The LTE Connected Car concept — which also will be demonstrated in Alcatel-Lucent’s booth #8A147 at the upcoming Mobile World Congress (February 15-18) in Barcelona — represents an exciting new potential revenue opportunity for network operators, automotive suppliers and application providers, and sets the stage to usher in a new era of richer and personalized in-car end-user experiences. This solution concept car offers a comprehensive menu of futuristic entertainment, infotainment, security and driving-related features that can be sampled in the vehicle.

In addition to the LTE Connected Car, the event also will feature drive demonstrations, in an LTE-equipped R&D van – used to test the capabilities of LTE technology — of mobile services on the company’s campus-wide LTE network operating at 2.6 GHz, which is expected to be one of the leading frequency bands for LTE in Europe. The demonstration, using Alcatel-Lucent’s end-to-end LTE solution and a mobile device from LG Electronics, will feature multiple, simultaneous streaming video sessions, multiplayer mobile games and photo and music downloads, as well as a smooth transition between 3G/HSPA and LTE networks, a critical requirement for operators that need to ensure a seamless quality of experience for their subscribers as they begin to deploy LTE.

“Alcatel-Lucent is quickly establishing a leading position in the emerging LTE market, through trials and commercial agreements with tier 1 service providers worldwide,” said Pierre Barnabe, President and General Manager of Alcatel-Lucent in France. “This event represents an ideal opportunity to demonstrate the enormous potential of LTE to revolutionize the wireless industry here in Europe, and the tremendous benefits it offers to service providers as they look to expand their service offerings, improve the end-user experience and optimize their cost profile.”

Other demonstrations at the event include solution concepts such as:

• Digital Signage with SIGNEXX – in which self-contained jumbo screens replace traditional outdoor billboards and interactive posters that are used indoors, represents an exciting new medium for precisely targeting consumers efficiently and cost-effectively, and updating content dynamically and remotely. The interactive digital signage demonstration from Signexx is also newly integrated with Alcatel Lucent’s mobile payment solution for network operators, allowing for end to end interactive retail applications to become a reality on the mobile device.

• Mobile Gaming with FishLabs – in which the high bandwidth and low latency of LTE connections enables multiple players in different locations, on both wired and wireless devices, enjoy a high-quality real-time multiplayer gaming experience without lag or other technical impediments.

• Secure Anywhere with Gemalto – in which a mobile subscriber is able to use a single authentication and authorization process to access multiple “cloud-based” applications/collaborative tools using a mobile device and Universal Identity Circuit Cards (UICC).

• Alcatel-Lucent SmartPhone TV – Leveraging the new multimedia capabilities of emerging devices such as SmartPhones, Tablet PCs and other connected devices, the Alcatel-Lucent SmartPhone TV solution allows to access to multimedia content in a personalized and contextualized way.
