January 5, 2010 — The ng Connect Program will demonstrate for the first time five new Solution Concepts at CES focusing on mobile home management, ‘anywhere, anytime’ gaming,  location-based rich content, and streaming video from mobile phone to TV.  The program’s recently announced LTE Connected Car solution concept will be on display showcasing a wide range of in-vehicle features and services made possible with emerging 4G/LTE networks, including three new features added since launching in November. The ng Connect Program is developing a variety of pre-integrated Solution Concepts featuring the latest innovations in network, device and software technologies which 4G/LTE networks can support as they are deployed beginning this year.

Since the multi-industry initiative’s launch less than one year ago, the program has grown to 27 members worldwide, and this rich ecosystem of infrastructure, device, content and application providers has generated fourteen Solution Concepts representing the wide range of services and functionality the deployment of ultra high bandwidth 4G/Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks make possible.

At CES, the ng Connect Program will showcase the ability of LTE networks to support new kinds of rich content and formats which are in increasing demand from consumers. This growing consumer interest represents compelling revenue opportunities for content and service providers as LTE networks are deployed in the next few years.  New and enhanced ng Connect Program Solution Concepts powered by LTE at CES include:

  • Safe At Home – ng Connect member Intamac Systems, a market leading company integrating services and devices in a variety of environments including home automation and security, worked with program members QNX Software Systems and Alcatel-Lucent to integrate its home management capability into the LTE Connected Car.  For the first time at CES, the ng Connect Program will demonstrate the ability to manage home systems such as temperature and light control easily from any of the car’s four in-vehicle touchscreens. The LTE Connected Car is a solution concept based on a 2010 Toyota Prius showcasing a wide range of in-vehicle services which can be supported by LTE networks once they are deployed.  Other LTE Connected Car services include navigation, personal security, vehicle wellness, and “infotainment” services.
  •  Anywhere Mobile Gaming – GameStreamer, a next generation digital distribution network for video games, worked with program member Alcatel-Lucent to bring its game storefront to an array of portable devices ranging from handhelds to the LTE Connected Car.  At CES, GameStreamer will demonstrate a popular game from their online storefronts, Q*bert, which can be played from any passenger seat in the LTE Connected Car.  Visitors can also experience streaming new games from the storefront to the car, illustrating the high performance bandwidth offered by LTE. GameStreamer will also show the ability to stream and instantly play the fast action multi-player game Section8 against another gamer located in Canada over a live LTE network.
  • CelebMap – Utilizing BUZZMEDIA’s leading online pop culture news and community destination, Celebuzz, CES visitors at the ng Connect Program demo suite can see localized celebrity events, photos, news and gossip instantly populating a map based on GPS-determined locations.  CelebMap will identify and stream real-time Las Vegas celebrity events to the LTE Connected Car touchscreens and on a smartphone.
  • Connected Camera – Using a high definition camera, demonstrators will take pictures in the booth and capture related speech for audio files attached to the image.  The voice recording will also be converted to text for use with the image. The data attached with each picture will include text, a geo-tag of the location where the photo was taken and an audio file. The images with associated text and voice recordings will be uploaded and stored in the cloud demonstrating the ability of LTE to easily support bandwidth-heavy files.
  • Crowdcasting – Recording video on a mobile phone no longer has to be an isolated, delayed experience.  Demonstrated for the first time at CES, videos will be streamed on a mobile phone and relayed over a live LTE network provided by Alcatel-Lucent, to a TV screen feet or miles away.  Contacts will be alerted to the new video sent over the network to a DVR via a pop-up message that will appear on the TV.  The message gives viewers a one-button option to switch and watch the live video being streamed.  Soccer moms and dads can now film their kids’ games and send the video from the match to Grandma and Grandpa for real-time viewing on their TV.
  • Video-Enhanced Interactive Digital Signage – Digital signage provider MediaTile, a worldwide supplier of award-winning, all-in-one cellular digital signage and kiosk solutions will demonstrate new brand-to-consumer communications capability using a prototype high-definition interactive display that combines live 2-way video communication capabilities with simultaneous interactive promotional messages. The second generation prototype takes advantage of the high bandwidth wireless IP connection from the emerging 4G/LTE services provided by Alcatel-Lucent as well as MediaTile’s 4G Video Presence technology and MediaCast System.

“The ng Connect Program is very pleased to be at the industry’s most influential consumer electronics event to demonstrate how LTE will benefit content providers, consumer device manufacturers and network operators,” said Derek Kuhn, Vice President of Emerging Technology and Media, Alcatel-Lucent. “Our members have worked hard together to create fourteen Solution Concepts which show the wide range of services and content LTE networks will be capable of supporting as they are deployed in the near future.  Network operators, content providers, and device manufacturers are paying close attention to our work as it shows the new business models and revenue opportunities made possible with next generation networks. Consumer interest in new services, new content and access anywhere from any device is growing tremendously every year. The ng Connect Program members are showing the world the amazing services that are possible to satisfy this demand.”
The ng Connect Program will demonstrate these end-to-end next generation broadband applications at the Alcatel-Lucent Booth located in the Venetian Hotel, Veronese 2503.

About LTE
LTE is a new wireless broadband technology that delivers significantly faster data speeds with the potential of 100 Mbps downstream and 30 Mbps upstream with reduced latency, allowing end users to consume more complex content at faster speeds, complementing the broadband capabilities of fixed networking technologies such as GPON.
