UCell gets 4G license in Uzbekistan

Uzbek mobile operator UCell has received the license for 4G LTE mobile technology.

Uzbek mobile operator UCell has received the license for 4G LTE mobile technology.

With the frequencies UCell has been awarded, the company expects to build in future a mobile network that is more than 10 times faster than today’s 3G networks.

TeliaSonera, a majority shareholder of Ucell, was the first operator in the world with the launch of commercial 4G LTE services to customers in Stockholm, Sweden, and in Oslo, Norway, in 2009. During 2010, the extensive network roll out continues in 25 cities in Sweden and 4 in Norway.

Earlier this year, TeliaSonera increased its ownership in UCell from 74 percent to 94 percent by acquiring 20 percent of the shares in the jointly owned TeliaSonera Uzbek Telecom Holding B.V. from Takilant Limited.

UCell became the second largest mobile operator in Uzbekistan, with 5,074,000 subscriptions and a market share of approximately 31 percent as of 2009.
