Verizon Announces 5G Plan for Los Angeles, Tests LTE over CBRS Spectrum

Verizon plans to deploy 5G technology in Los Angeles starting in the fourth quarter of 2018. Los Angeles is the second city Verizon has identified as part of its 3-5 market 5G deployment plans, first announced in November 2017. Verizon previously announced Sacramento would be a 5G city.

The operator is on track to deploy 5G fixed broadband service and a 5G mobile solution in the U.S and plans launch our 5G residential broadband service in 3-5 markets later this year and take the aggressive approach to the deployment of 5G mobility when devices become available.

Verizon along with Ericsson, Federated Wireless and Qualcomm have also successfully tested 4G LTE technology over CBRS spectrum (Citizens Broadband Radio Service) in Verizon’s live commercial network.  After the successful initial trials last year and ongoing work to advance the CBRS ecosystem in Verizon’s lab in Texas, this real-world deployment marks the beginning of public access to the 150 MHz bandwidth of 3.5 GHz shared spectrum which until now has been used by the federal government for radar systems.  

The deployment in Florida used a combination of Verizon licensed AWS and 700 MHz spectrum aggregated with 50 MHz of CBRS band 48 spectrum.  The combination of these LTE Advanced features of multiple antennas, 256 QAM, and carrier aggregation across shared and licensed spectrum produced peak speeds of 790 Mbps.  The deployments in Florida involved outdoor and in-building systems.

For this deployment, Ericsson provided Ericsson Radio DOT system for indoor and Radio 2208 for outdoor, Qualcomm Technologies provided the Snapdragon TM 845 mobile test device with X20 LTE for access to CBRS on mobile devices, and Federated Wireless provided the prioritization through their Spectrum Controller, a Spectrum Access System (SAS) that dynamically allocates channels within the FCC’s spectrum sharing framework for this band.
