Vodafone has announced in March that it has made the Data Connection in Italy using LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology in test conditions at its TSCC (Technology and Service Creation Centre) Innovation Lab in Milan.

The move confirms Vodafone’s ongoing commitment to drive the development of fourth generation (4G) mobile broadband technology, with the aim of ensuring that its customers have access to the best available services. The test was carried out using Nokia Siemens Networks network equipment.

Vodafone has been testing LTE technology in its Milan laboratories since May 2009, at first using prototype equipment and, more recently, commercial solutions to be used in field trials. The initial performances of the commercial equipment installed in its laboratories in January 2010 were in line with 4G standard specifications and showed that it is capable of achieving the expected transmission speeds without any adjustments.

The tests taking place in Italy form part of Vodafone group’s wider global LTE development programme, with field trials now underway in selected locations across Europe.
