India’s Tata Teleservices Limited (TTSL) has signed a contract with Huawei to rollout TTSL’s 3G network in India earler this week. Another Chinese vendor ZTE has landed in a 300-crore contract on Friday to supply WiMax systems to state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) for its broadband rollout.
After a virtual blanket ban on Chinese telecom equipment imports for the past seven months, the controls appear to have suddenly eased.
TTSL, which recently acquired the spectrum for 9 circles for rolling out 3G services, has selected Huawei to implement a robust and rapid rollout in 5 circles.
According to TTSL Chief Technology Officer and President (Enterprise Business) A.. G. Rao, “Huawei will provide 3G technology and services to our consumers…we are getting the latest LTE-ready technology from our technology partner.”
TTSL has selected Huawei’s 3G technology under the managed services model, which includes the installation of thousands of Huawei’s industry leading, LTE—ready, SingleRAN 4th generation multi standard radios (MSR).
Tata Teleservices had earlier announced last month the selection of Nokia Siemens as a supplier for its 3G rollout as well. The business from the nine service areas will be shared between Huawei and Nokia Siemens Networks.
According to ZTE India chairman & managing director Dr DK Ghosh, the company would provide the range of WiMax systems to speed up BSNL’s WiMax broadband rollout over the next six months, reports Economic Times. The company has entered into a deal with BSNL to provide varied WiMax systems valued at US$3000 million. The device will be a mix of WiMax base-stations, switches and specialized WiMax terminals/handhelds. A portion of the equipment will be manufactured at ZTE India’s Manesar plant.
