SAN DIEGO – September 1, 2009 – Continuous Computing, the only company deploying uniquely architected systems comprised of telecom platforms and Trillium software, today announced the availability of FlexTCA 3.0, the company’s next generation of pre-integrated ATCA platforms that enable customers to roll out wireless and deep packet inspection (DPI) applications with reduced risk, cost and complexity. FlexTCA 3.0 brings together best-in-class ATCA components with advanced system software that now includes intuitive GUI-based Essential Services tools for managing deployed systems, the company’s latest FlexCompute ATCA-XE60 compute blade, and an updated Service Availability Forum – compliant high availability middleware framework.

FlexTCA 3.0 features a number of exciting new options, including combined AC/DC 2-slot chassis and AC/DC 6-slot chassis that empower customers to hold a single chassis configuration in stock for each size, rather than two chassis per size, and then fit AC or DC power entry modules depending on operator need. Such deployment flexibility reduces inventory costs and reduces lead times dramatically, making customers more cost-competitive.

Additional improvements to FlexTCA 3.0 Wireless and DPI platforms include:

  • Enhanced Essential Services software for powerful diagnostic and remote management capabilities
  • Layer 2 High Availability (L2HA) software yielding low latency, greatly reduced network overhead and decreased convergence time
  • Tight integration of the latest release of GoAhead SAFfire high availability and management middleware (v3.0)
  • Integrated Layer 4 Load Balancing functions to direct sessions / flows across multiple switch, packet and compute blades
  • FlexCompute ATCA-XE60 single board computer with dual Intel Xeon 5500 series processors (both ATCA and high power options) supporting 8 cores / 16 threads (doubling previous generation performance) and support for over 1 terabyte of storage

“Our new FlexTCA is a powerful, pre-integrated platform that is optimized for customers in the process of developing DPI and processing-intensive wireless applications where maximizing simultaneous session count is a top priority,” said Manish Singh, vice president of product line management, Continuous Computing. “FlexTCA saves valuable design and integration hours, reducing the go-to-market timeline by 12 to 24 months over in-house design or commercial off-the-shelf integration.”

FlexTCA provides exceptional performance levels for customer Procera Networks, a developer of Evolved DPI solutions, and has enabled these solutions to score exceptionally well in recent peer-to-peer (P2P) traffic detection and management tests conducted by EANTC, the European Advanced Networking Test Center. Procera chose FlexTCA for its advanced packet processing capabilities and ability to accelerate time-to-market, thus enabling the early introduction of the PacketLogic PL10014 80Gbps traffic management and security application.

“The recent P2P testing by EANTC showed a massive performance increase across the DPI market in the past 18 months,” said Carsten Rossenhoevel, managing director at EANTC. “PacketLogic demonstrated very good detection accuracy and blocking efficiency, and easily scaled beyond our 25Gbps test bed.”

The FlexTCA 3.0 platform is a core component of Continuous Computing’s pre-integrated Wireless and DPI Solutions suites, which were announced in February 2009. Continuous Computing is an early pioneer in providing DPI solutions to the global wireless market, offering highly integrated products that enable network equipment providers (NEPs) to accelerate the delivery of carrier-class systems to market in order to meet operator demand despite in-house budget reductions in today’s challenging economy. The solutions suites offer NEPs unprecedented levels of integration to expedite the delivery of high-quality, standards-based 3G and Long Term Evolution (LTE) infrastructure as well as packet processing applications including Security, Traffic Management, Traffic Shaping, Internet Traffic Offload, Mobile Advertising and Mobile Network DPI.
